Hundreds Rally for Simmer Kaur in Ward 5 Mississauga – Malik Endorses Kaur
Aug 21, 2011 – More than 400 people came out to support Simmer Kaur, candidate for Ward 5 city council, at her campaign rally and official office opening Sunday afternoon.
Community members in attendance included members of the Malton Seniors Club, local sports clubs, business leaders, family and friends.
Also, in attendance was Mr. Tariq Malik, son of Mr. Mahmood Malik (a candidate in the October 2010 election) who spoke on his father’s behalf and endorsed Simmer. “My father says that only by banding together can we make a difference. Simmer is the best candidate and so we should all come together to support her and send her as our representative to city hall,” said Malik.
In her speech to the audience, Kaur thanked all her supporters for helping her place second in the last municipal election in October 2010. Given her strong support, she did not hesitate to put her name forward again when the seat became unexpectedly empty.
Kaur spoke about her long history in Mississauga where she has lived for more than 15 years. “Like many residents I am an immigrant. I came to Canada as a teenager, attended high school and college here and went on to build a business and raise my family here in Mississauga. She also spoke of the need to “stand up for Malton.”
“Malton is one of the most challenged or high risk areas of the GTA. Gang presence has increased dramatically since 2003. Child poverty has increased since 2003. This is not acceptable. Mothers are telling me they are concerned about their children’s safety, education and health. I will work to get Malton the help it needs.”
Kaur also spoke about the need to fast track transit projects and bring Light Rapid Transit and eventually a link to the Toronto subway system to Mississauga. “Mississauga is the 6th largest city in Canada and we have one of the fastest growing populations. High quality transit is a must and I will work with council to aggressively lobby the federal and provincial governments for our share of infrastructure funds so that we can move forward with long overdue transit improvements.”
Election day is on September 19 2010. For more information please visit www.simerkaur.com or call the campaign office at:905-676-9500
