Simmer Kaur Speaks Up For Malton in Debate

Aug 30, 2011 – Simmer Kaur, candidate for Ward 5 city councilor in the Mississauga by-election participated in a lively all candidates’ debate in which she answered questions about transit, air pollution, Malton’s image and more.

21 of the 27 registered candidates participated in the debate and in her closing statement, Kaur noted that she is the only candidate currently running who also ran in the 2010 municipal election. She thanked her supporters who cast thousands of votes in hser favour and led her to a strong second place finish. do to improve air quality, Kaur said “I will work to have more green spaces in our community. Not only will having more parks and planting more trees improve air quality, but families, seniors and young people can spend quality time there.” She said she would ask that all future development and redevelopment give priority to green space, parks and tree planting.

Kaur also spoke of the need to give more attention to Malton. “Malton has been neglected for far too long. People tell me they don’t even feel safe taking a walk in the evening in their neighborhoods.” She also noted that simple things such as more bus shelters, a washroom at the Westwood mall bus terminal and cleaner streets,” would go a long way in improving the lives of Malton residents.

Finally, when asked if current transit is satisfactory, Kaur said that she would work with all partners including the city of Brampton to finally get the long delayed Goreway Bridge built so that residents do not have to wait 15-20 minutes at the railway tracks every time a train passes. She also called for bringing more transit projects to Mississauga. “Other municipalities such as Toronto are moving ahead with Light Rail Transit and subway expansion. I’d like to see Light Right Transit come to Mississauga sooner rather than later and eventually an extension from the Toronto Subway system into Mississauga,” said Kaur. “We are the 6th largest city in Canada and have one of the fastest growing populations. We have to invest in transit to get rid of grid lock on our streets.”

Kaur ended the debate by humbly asking voters for their support on September 19. “I am not a career politician but I know the needs and concerns of ward 5 residents,” said Kaur. “My promise to the residents of Ward 5 is that I will work hard to deliver results.”
