Simmer Kaur Ahead According to Poll
Sept 5, 2011 – According to an internal poll, Simmer Kaur, Candidate for Ward 5 city councilor is in the top 4 of the 27 candidates running and the only South Asian candidate in the top 5. Kaur is well positioned to be the next city councilor for Ward 5 and the first south asian woman in the history of Mississauga to be on council.
Kaur credits her hard work during the last municipal election for her strong support in the current by-election. Kaur came in a strong second and received thousands of votes.
“We didn’t stop working after the October 2010 election. When the by-election was announced we continued meeting people, working in the community and building on our base.”
Although there are many candidates in the race, polling shows that Kaur has high profile in the ward, high name recognition and strong support of voters.
“We have to be united and put our support behind the candidate with the best chance to succeed. In the past the community has split their vote among multiple candidates and as a result we have not been able to bring great change to city hall,” says Kaur.
Highlights of the campaign:
- Kaur has knocked on thousands of doors and has the largest volunteer group on the ground.
- Kaur has secured more than 3000 sign locations in the Ward.
- Kaur received almost 3000 votes in the last election and is well positioned to build on that base.
- Kaur has been endorsed by past candidate Mahmood Malik.
- Kaur has support of local sports clubs, seniors groups, members of the local small business community, media and working class families across the ward.
